Copenhagen – a beginners guide

September 10, 2024 5:02 am

Copenhagen is famous all over the world for one thing – the little mermaid. And if you only do one thing when you are in Copenhagen, please DO NOT MAKE IT a visit to the little mermaid.

It is exactly what it says it is. Little. And it is stuck on a rock out of town, that takes some effort to get to.

Instead enjoy the city. It is worth what little effort that takes

We are only in Copenhagen for three days, and that is nowhere near enough. It is a beautiful city, compact and flat and so easy to walk around

If Denmark has a hill, I didn’t see it. Apparently the highest point in Denmark is 560 ft above sea level. But basically it is flat. Which makes it great for walking, cycling and running. None of those are pastimes that I have embraced. But I am happy to do the first, the second is not for me until someone invents a bicycle seat that I can actually sit on comfortably, and as for running. Never! This body was not made for running.

Like Amsterdam, Copenhagen has embraced the bicycle. Unlike American cyclists, Danish cyclists do not feel they own the road, and always have the right of way. In Denmark they are so much better behaved. It seems that every road has two bicycle lanes, one either side of the street, and although there are no signs to tell you, all the cyclists stick to the lane on their right, so that each bicycle lane is one way.

That seems like such a good idea. Another, even better idea, is that Danish cyclists actually stop at zebra crossings to allow pedestrians to cross the road. What a revolutionary idea.

The Danes are a lovely bunch. They are orderly and kind. They do not litter. Their streets are spotlessly clean, there is very little graffiti and the crime rate is the second lowest in the world. Plus they all speak English fluently. What more could you ask for.

Well there is just one thing. They appear to have a problem with flatulence. They are not alone in that. Gordon suffers from that too. But of course I never have. But still, it is a little unsettling when you see the signs

Tomorrow we board the Silver Dawn for a two week Baltic Cruise. Every day is a port day so it is going to be hard to find time to write the blog – but stay tuned, just in case
