Galle. It’s the tourists that spoil it

Sri Lanka is full of English, which is hardly surprising. After all, we did own it at one point, and some of them are acting as if they still do.

More surprising is that it is also full of Russians. They are instantly recognizable because they act like the chinese, loud, rude and objectionable, but they are considerably better looking. They have never seen a queue they didn’t want to push to the front of, or a bottle of alcohol they didn’t want to empty.

Ukrainians are also everywhere. They look like Russians, which is fortunate for them, but they are much better behaved, which is fortunate for everyone else.

The British are instantly recognizable, because, well………..

Its their classy good looks and sense of style that make them so easy to spot.

They were sitting next to us having dinner. The lady, and I use that term loosely, sitting on the left, with the hair that she proudly styled herself, was heard to tell the lady on the right, who hasn’t touched her hair since leaving England

“well, the Scottish would never behave like that, unless of course they go to Blackpool”

Something that the English will understand but most Americans will not. (Its not quite the same, but think Coney Island) But it is rather a wonderful line, especially when you consider the person saying it.

We have been in Galle for four days. We could stay for weeks

We love it for its charming streets

Its restaurants that look inviting even in the pouring rain

Its excellent food

Its stylish shops

its equally stylish people

and its love of the Morris Minor (they are everywhere. They even have a repair shop for them)

But most of all we love that it still embraces the old way of life

But tomorrow we must move on…………………….
